ICT Internal Compression Treatment


In venous insufficiency states, venous blood escapes from its normal antegrade path of flow and refluxes backward down the veins into an already congested leg. Venous insufficiency syndromes are most commonly caused by valvular incompetence in the low-pressure superficial venous system but may also be caused by valvular incompetence in the high-pressure deep venous system (or, rarely, both).

Untreated venous insufficiency in the deep or superficial system causes a progressive syndrome (chronic venous insufficiency [CVI]). Historically, CVI was known as postphlebitic syndrome and postthrombotic syndrome, terms referring to the conditions that cause most cases. In addition to poor cosmesis, CVI can lead to chronic life-threatening infections of the lower extremities. Pain, especially after ambulation, is a hallmark of the disease. CVI causes characteristic changes, called lipodermatosclerosis, to the skin of the lower extremities, which lead to eventual skin ulceration.

What is ICT?

ICT is an internal compression therapy for dysfunctioning vein valve. The procedure is also called percutaneous valvuloplasty. The aim in ICT is to deliver specifically designed non-absorbable biopolymer around the targeted vein valve as an exo-skeleton. ICT is the first real treatment option for VI rather than cancelling the vein by several methods. Aim in ICT is to fix the problematic vein, recover from the symptoms and prevent future development of VI.

Increased vein diameter is the real problem!

Superficial venous insufficiency (VI) can be treated with multiple methods. But all treatment methods for VI are cancelling the problematic vein works by heat ablation, embolization or surgically removal. These treatment options are not applicable for deep venous insufficiency (DVI). DVI is generally an untreated syndrome that effect quality of life dramatically in the long run. However, it is claimed that there is a surgical treatment option, success rate is dramatically low.

ICT works as an exo-skeleton for vein valves. Procedure is fast, safe and easy. It can be done in outpatient conditions in minutes. Procedure steps are consistent of:

  • Mapping and detecting problematic vein valves to be treated with Doppler-Ultrasound (DUS).
  • Placing a 6F introducer sheath between vein and muscle fascia a few cm before the target valve.
  • Sending the specially braided 6F application catheter to the treatment zone between vein and muscular fascia through the introducer sheath.
  • Injection of necessary amount of biopolymer around the vein valve
